چکیده

We prove the existence of secondary terms of order X in the Davenport-Heilbronn theorems on cubic fields and 3-torsion in class groups of quadratic fields. For cubic fields this confirms a conjecture of Datskovsky-Wright and Roberts. We also prove a variety of generalizations, including to arithmetic progressions, where we discover a curious bias in the secondary term. Roberts’ conjecture has also been proved independently by Bhargava, Shankar, and Tsimerman. In contrast to their work, our proof uses the analytic theory of zeta functions associated to the space of binary cubic forms, developed by Shintani and Datskovsky-Wright.

Orbital L-functions for the Space of Binary Cubic Forms

We introduce the notion of orbital L-functions for the space of binary cubic forms and investigate their analytic properties. We study their functional equations and residue formulas in some detail. Aside from their intrinsic interest, the results from this paper are used to prove the existence of secondary terms in counting functions for cubic fields. This is worked out in a companion paper.

The Secondary Term in the Counting Function for Cubic Fields

Work in progress, September 21, 2010. We prove asymptotic formulas for the number of cubic fields of positive or negative discriminant less than X. These formulas involve main terms of X and X multiplied by appropriate constants, with error terms of O(X ). This confirms a conjecture of Datskovsky-Wright [13] and Roberts [25]. Our results continue to hold when finitely many splitting conditions ...

Analytic Properties of Shintani Zeta Functions

In this note, we describe various theoretical results, numerical computations, and speculations concerning the analytic properties of the Shintani zeta functions associated to the space of binary cubic forms. We describe how these zeta functions almost fit into the general analytic theory of zeta and L-functions, and we discuss the relationship between this analytic theory and counting problems...

Identities for Field Extensions Generalizing the Ohno–nakagawa Relations

In previous work, Ohno [Ohn97] conjectured, and Nakagawa [Nak98] proved, relations between the counting functions of certain cubic fields. These relations may be viewed as complements to the Scholz reflection principle, and Ohno and Nakagawa deduced them as consequences of ‘extra functional equations’ involving the Shintani zeta functions associated to the prehomogeneous vector space of binary ...

Four Perspectives on Secondary Terms in the Davenport-heilbronn Theorems

This paper is an expanded version of the author’s lecture at the Integers Conference 2011. We discuss the secondary terms in the Davenport-Heilbronn theorems on cubic fields and 3-torsion in class groups of quadratic fields. Such secondary terms had been conjectured by Datskovsky-Wright and Roberts, and proofs of these or closely related secondary terms were obtained independently by Bhargava, ...
